We should know about the Bible teaches concerning civil government. A few reasons are listed below for our consideration:
1. How can we, as christians, work as a salt in a polluted world, and as individual lights in a darkened era? What should we respond or not respond in a
social media internet platform society with many media with an anti-bible hidden agenda? What should we do when many conservative voices are silenced in our educational institutes where our children
are being educated?
2. Should we, as christians, speak out in defensing our faith against corruptions and pollutions of the world?
3. How to understand the separation of religion and politics in church life?
I. We would like first to look at biblical history on the subject of government first.
From the time of creation till the Great Flood which destroyed the humankind except the Noah family of eight people.
Adam and Eve were created by God to serve as His agents in managing the created world. Most importantly, Adam was created with the breath of God so that there can be fellowship
between the mankind and God. In other words, Adam and Eve and their descendants can communicate with their Creator, understand God’s will, and enjoy God’s presence. The mankind was created with
flesh, mind, and spirit which allow free choices. It is important to note that during this period, Adam and Eve can “see” God and “hear” God’s talking to them.
During this period, men communicated directly to God and were accountable to their God. There was no appointed leader or government over the mankind.
B. After the Flood
(i) During the immediate period after the flood, the mankind began to re-populate the Middle East region and after the babel tower event, the population began to scatter and
migrate out of the Middle East region. So it was more or less a tribal system. God dealt with tribal leaders. There was no government. God called Abram and changed his name to Abraham and had a
covenant with him and blessed him to be the agent of blessing for the world. Through Abraham’s descendant Jacob, God called Israel as His chosen people.
(ii) Because of severe famines in Palestine, Jacob went to Egypt. Due to God’s providence, Israel prospered in Egypt. Eventually, new Pharaoh of Egypt felt threaten and enslaved
Israel. God sent Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. During this period, God led Israel through Moses, the Prophet. The Law was given to Israel through Moses at Mt. Sinai. Also a sacrifice and
offer-rite system was established through appointing Alan and his sons as priests. During this period, God ruled Israel through a theocratic system through Moses.
(iii) After Moses and Joshua, Israel settled down in the promised land. God raised various judges among Israel to lead Israel. It should be noted that because of ingratitude of
Israel, they often forgot their God and served gentile gods and hence, were enslaved by their enemies. Each time God raised a judge to save them after Israel remembered their God and cried to their
God for salvation. During this period, those judges were often the able individuals who led Israel to fight against their enemies.
(iv) Towards the end of judges, Israel was ruled by the priests such as Eli and Samuel although Israel still had elders to help them as well. Samuel was appointed by God as a
prophet to lead Israel. Samuel appointed his sons as judges but they failed to be good judges. So the elders of Israel asked Samuel to install a king to over rule them just like the gentile people.
God was not happy and instructed Samuel to follow what people wanted because they forsook God. “7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have
not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this
day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of
the king who will reign over them.” (See 1 Sam 8:7-9)
(v) The kingdoms of Israel was thus established through Saul, David, Solomon, and then the split Northern and Southern kings. Because of unrepentant Israel people, the kingdoms of
Israel were destroyed and Israel people were eventually exiled first by the Babylon king and then by the Assyrian king.
(vi) In the gentile period, Israel people were rules by the gentiles such as Persian,Greek, Roman, and Ottoman Empire etc. In this period, Israel people were scattered through out
the world for two thousand years until God gathered them back to Palestine to establish them as a nation again in 1948.
C. From the Christian Church prospectives
(i) From the Roman Catholic Church
The government form takes priest, bishop, archbishop, and the pope. In the local level, it is the priests and bishop provide the guidance. The Roman Catholic church is a world-wise
organization.
(ii) From the Evangelical Protestant churches
It is the government of elder board and a pastor or pastors. It is important to remind us that all of us belong to Chief Shepherd Jesus Christ who delegates the duty of shepherding
to a local pastor. What is the duty of a shepherd? Everything the congregation needs. In ancient time, certain reputable people among the congregation were selected to oversee the management of
things affecting the people. See Exodus 18:21, “21 Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be
rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.” Thus, in early churches, churches took care of civil governments by appointing its leaders.
(iii) Development of Civil Government in Church History
During the New Testament time, the church represents the body of Christ and Christ is the head of the church. Furthermore, after the ascension of Christ, advent of the Holy
Spirit on the day of the pentecost onto the church started the church era. Holy Spirit will teach the church the truth and will testify about Jesus Christ and will lead the church to glorify
Christ in the world. Thus, the elders and the pastor are the Christ’s appointees to shepherd the church through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Throughout history, conflicts between kings and popes eventually led to the split of civil and religious authorities. The church gives up the authority of civil government aspect
to the gentile societies but keep the religious authority. In other words, the church does not interfere with civic functions while the civil government does not interfere with religious functions.
This is the famous doctrine of Separation of Religion and State in most countries today.
II. Conflicts between Church and State
The Nature of Civil Government
Leaders of civil government come from the free elections participated by the citizens of that society. In other words, leaders are voted in by the people to govern the people’s affairs by people’s consents. Depending upon the structure of the government, policies and laws are enacted by the leaders in different branches of the government. If people do not like the policies and the laws, they can vote new leaders in to institute new policies and laws.
Because the civil government deals only on the affairs of the flesh, they may enact and enforce the laws that interfere with religious functions of the church. This is particularly evident when the leaders of the government do not believe in God and do not respect the authority of God.
B. Historical Lessons
Ever since the NT church era, there were plentiful of events that the church was under governmental abuses and prosecutions. In fact, our Lord was prosecuted
and murdered by then civil and religious authorities.
(i) Under Romans government’s prosecution, our Lord told Pilate, “36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so
that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” (John 18:36).
(ii) When Apostle Peter and others were prosecuted and ordered not to follow and worship Jesus Christ, Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
(See Acts 5:29)
(iii) In fact, most of Apostles were murdered or exiled in NT times and many prophets were murdered in OT time. Prosecutions of Christian churches happened throughout history even
today.
III. Roles of Church in Modern Society
A. Main Roles of Church
Main roles of church as the body of Christ are to listen to its head and to glorify its head Jesus Christ. The church is to witness Christ and to glorify Christ through teaching the truth and
spreading good news of the Gospel. Main functions of the church are in the areas of religious services: bible teaching, christian fellowship, worship services, making disciples, evangelical
activities, and charitable community services. In general, a church focuses on religious matters and does not participate in civil government activities unless the civil government interferes with
the church activities. In other words, churches should not be lobbyists for political parties. However, to be salts and lights, a church shall speak the truth about the biblical values. The church
shall not be silenced by a hostile government.
B. Main Roles of Christians
Because the leaders of a civil government are elected by people, all christians are citizens and shall perform their civic duties including voting and politicking for the benefits of the society in
general and the benefits of the church in particular. In other words, a church should not teach its members to avoid their civic duties. It is therefore unbiblical for a pastor to discourage
christians to avoid their civic duties.
To Believers: Which Side are You With!
A. We were Chosen by Jesus Christ our Lord from the World to be Holy and Commissioned to His Ministry to Bear Fruits for the Gospel.
As a christian, you cannot be so ignorant as to what you are! Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us clearly in John 15:16, “16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go
and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”. There are many verses in the Bible that God told us to come out of the
corruptions/filths of the world. (See Isiah 52:11, 2 Corinthians 6:17, Rev 18:4). As you know in the Bible, the Babylonia city was the symbol of the wickedness, evil, corruptions, and filthiness of
the world. We were called out of the world to be holy and to bear fruits for the Gospel.
B. We Are To Be Sanctified by the Truth and We Must Support the Biblical Values
Our Lord clearly taught us in His high priestly prayer in John 17: 16-19, “16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You
sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.” It is so clear that we christians are in the
world, but not of the world.
C. We do not Support Enemies of Christ
Concisely speaking, we stand with our Lord Jesus Christ. Our lives do not mix with the worldly filthy practices. This means clearly that as christians, we oppose the worldly corruptions and filthy
ways. This also means that we clearly recognize those who are against God. So which side are you with: We are against those policies that are against the biblical truth and values. As a
christian, you cannot ignorantly support enemies of our Lord Jesus Christ!
D. We Pray for the Leaders of Government, even Our Enemies for Their Salvation to Avoid Going to the Hell through God’s Horrifying Judgement in the End Time
Furthermore, the Bible tells us that our struggles are not against flesh and blood as shown in Ephesians 6:12, “12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” We should therefore urgently pray to our Mighty Lord for our societies and even
our enemies, so that they can repent and return to God to escape the terrible and horrified forthcoming judgement onto this degenerate era and the evil world!
Futile Political Correctness Living
1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from
your fathers
Do you know what is the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors? Obviously handed down to us from our ancestors means traditions, cultures, and
customs. Certainly not all handed down to us are the empty way of life. You might ask what is the empty way of life? New American Standard Version called it “your futile way of life”. New King James
Version called it “your aimless conduct received by tradition”. Thus, we were redeemed from the empty way of life, from our futile way of life, and from our aimless conduct. These unfruitful
ways of life came from traditions inherited from our ancestors. What are they? Anything that is not lasting, anything that is futile, and anything that is temporal without eternal
value.
Best way to understand this is by examples.
Example 1. The futile way of worshipping the gentile idols. There are millions of people in this category.
Example 2. The aimless conducts of political correction to silent conscience of right and wrong. This category includes millions of people living and being deceived by political doctrinarians such as
political dictatorship or religious dictatorship like jihadists, and political correctness in various societies.
Thus, we were redeemed from idol worship. We were redeemed from political correctness.
We were redeemed from corruptions of this world. Do not sell our souls for lusts, power, and money. Our God provides all necessary provisions and grace for His children to live a decent and holy
lives in this perishing world.
There is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.(See 1 Coringthians 8:6)

The name which is above every name that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Inerrancy of Holy Scripture - Psalm 19:7-9, Matt 5:18

Glorious Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ which demonstrates the love of God - John 3:16-18
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of Go
Obedience to God is much better than offering sacrifices - Hos 6:6
不喜愛祭祀;
For I delight in loyalty
rather than sacrifice.
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
(Hos 6:6)
The righteous shall live by faith alone - Habbakuk 2:4

Self-denial and be patient in enduring afflictions are the God's ways for us in following Jesus Christ our Lord - Matthew 16:24
Goal of Redemption is in Sanctification of the Spirit, through Obedience to Jesus Christ, and be Holy to the LORD. Be Ye Holy, For I am Holy.
(1 Peter 1:15-16; Lev 11:45)
