Reminder from a pastor...
Reminder from a pastor...

A Lamp before my Path

This section was added to remind us the Bible teachings on our day-to-day issues. One of the aspects of living in this age is that we are all very busy. We are so heavily laden that we really  need to get wisdom from our Lord Jesus Christ to help us deal with all kind of issues that upset us. A feature of this Section is that we would try to make these reminders in short articles or pictures so that you would have more time to ponder on  the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord in your life.

  1. Why do we need the Bible in our daily living?
  2.   Why do we not see the light on our paths
  3. The righteous will live by his faith. - Habbakuk 2:4
  4. Peace amidst Chaos

  5. A Reminder of God’s Will on All of Us

Why do we need the Bible in our daily living?

  1. We need light to walk in the right path in a darkened and perverted world.

    Ps 119:105, Your word is a lamp to my feet
    And a light to my path.

  2. We need sure guidance in our daily lives.

    Ps 119:9, How can a young man keep his way pure?
    By keeping it according to Your word.

    2 Tim 3:16-17, 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

  3. We need God’s encouragement in our daily struggles.

    Ps 119: 28, My soul weeps because of grief;
    Strengthen me according to Your word.

    Ps 119: 49-50, Remember the word to Your servant,
    In which You have made me hope.
    50 This is my comfort in my affliction,
    That Your word has revived me.

  4. Enduring Jesus Christ’s love strengthens us always in our afflictions.

    Matthew 11:28-30, 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

  5. Jesus Christ will set us free from bondages and addictions

    John 6:63, 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

    Romans 8:24-25, 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

  6. We need God words to cleanse us every day of our lives

    Matthew 4:4,  But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

    John 17:16-17, "16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." Because of our bent toward sin, we need desperately regeneration of our mind by the Holy Spirit to think how God thinks and not how the world thinks. That is why we need the Bible and need to saturate our mind with God's word. More importantly, we need to learn to thank Jesus Christ our Lord constantly for all the blessings so lavishly pouring on us each and every day.

    Ephesians 5:25-27, 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church [a]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

Why do we not see the light on our paths?

We may wonder how come we do not see the light on our paths. If the Holy Bible is the light on our paths, how come we cannot see the light? This is indeed a great question worthy of our meditation.

Actually, it is quite easy to understand this. If I cannot see the light, either there is no light shining on my path or I cannot see the light because something blinds my eyes. Let us find out what the Bible says about this.

2 Cor 4:4,  “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

It is indeed very interesting to ask how can a mind be blinded so that a person does not see the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 1 John 2:15 reminds us the following;

15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

What happens to a person who does not love God? Romans 1:21 tells us clearly 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” In other words, the light in their heart was darkened so that they cannot see the true reality.

When people love the world, all their minds are filled with the things of the world so that not a single spot in their minds is left for God. As a matter of fact, they willingly exclude God from their school, from their government, and even from their vocabulary just as portrayed in Romans 1:28;

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

So what happens! Their minds are darkened so that they cannot see and cannot appreciate the love of God and the glory of Jesus Christ.

We may ask how come  believers can see the beauty of Jesus Christ who is the image of God. Because by their faith in Jesus Christ as personal savior and lord, God shines the light in their hearts again so that they can see again. The Bible reminds us the following;

 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”

Because of this, we are not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. And also because of this, we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus sake.

這實在是很有趣的事;一個人怎麼可能心靈被蒙蔽,而看不見基督的榮耀;基督本是神的像。約翰一書2:15如此提醒我們;

當人們愛世界,他們所有的心都充滿了世界的東西,所以心中沒有一點空間、是留給上帝。事實上,他們不愛上帝, 甚至故意從他們的學校、從他們的政府、從他們的詞彙、排除了上帝,就像羅馬書1:28所述;

我們可能會問,信徒怎麼可以看到、耶穌基督的美。基督本是神的像。因為信徒信耶穌基督為他的救主和他的主,上帝將光照在他的心、讓他可以再次看到光。聖經如此提醒我們;

The righteous will live by his faith. - Habakkuk 2:4

In a modern society of the 21 century, there is so much information overload that it is indeed very easy to get distracted. Indeed, it is a society with a fast pace life style coupled with instant satisfaction bent. What is important becomes fussy and many are misled.

People are busy and hence give little time to think about life and death. Only once awhile, people stop for a few moments to take care of the problems  when a disaster hits. Because the reality of life may not be pleasant, many people just simply ignore the life issues. This may help to explain the popularity of sitcom to laugh it off, or excitement of various sporting events to live for the moment, or parties to drink it off. The problems with these approaches such as drug, sex, power, and money are that they just delay and forget life; yet we still have to live to bear the blunt of the unresolved issues.

Modernism does not help. Why? Too much rationalization basing on too many conflicting perspectives tends to muddle the water and discourage people. That is why the Scripture indicates that people's hearts turn cold after so many wicked deceptive schemes targeting goodness of the people.

Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us in Matthew 7:13-14,

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A few people are blessed that, like the prodigal son of Luke Chapter 15, they wake up early enough to return to God. This is why our Lord warned people in Luke 13:22-24 to fight hard to get into the narrow gate.

Teaching in the Villages

22 And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

That is also why the Scripture reminds us to live by our faith alone each day of our lives in  this wicked world.

You might ask what does it means to live by faith? First of all, Christianity is centered in Christ. Without Christ, there is nothing left in Christianity. Christian faith is therefore not to live by a set of doctrines by our head or to perform  our external rites. Rather, Christian living is to have an eternal loving relationship with the triune God. Thus, there are plenty of hardships and difficulties in our living situations, yet as a christian we trust our Lord Jesus Christ in all our daily situations. Two biblical passages may be helpful. The first one is in Romans Chapter 6 which explains that our union with our Lord is the essence of our faith and the guiding light of our living by faith. The second one is the realization of Prophet Habakkuk that rejoice in the Lord is the foundation of our living each day by our faith.

Romans 6:3-8

3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,

Habakkuk 3:17-19

17 Though the fig tree should not blossom

And there be no fruit on the vines,

Though the yield of the olive should fail

And the fields produce no food,

Though the flock should be cut off from the fold

And there be no cattle in the stalls,

18 Yet I will exult in the Lord,

I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.

19 The Lord God is my strength,

And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet,

And makes me walk on my high places.

May our Lord richly bless you in your daily walk with Him who loves you always with eternal love. He is always faithful even when we sometimes failed so miserably in our unfaithfulness to Him. Yet, despite our failures, His enduring love contrains us to seek His mercies towards us always. Indeed, we all need to learn from Him who, by our Heavenly Father's  love to us, becomes our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and salvation.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Benediction

20 Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, 21 equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)

Peace amidst Chaos

In a fast busy world, it is necessary for us to be even more watchful where we are at and where we are going. If you have lived a few years behind you in this world, you know for sure that this is a fast grinding world that demands much of your energy just to stay alive and free.
Lately, it seems the world goes more and more awry. Listed below are a few events as a reminder of the stage of our days:
* Mass killing near UC Santa Barbara campus by a student from a wealthy family.
* Killing in the mass transit vehicle by a young person in Taipei and followed by a few copycats.
* Riots in Vietnam against China and killing many Chinese in Vietnam
* Military Coup in Thailand
* Conflicts in Egypt
* Terrorists abducted more than 250 school girl in Nigeria and conducted almost daily killings of innocent people.
* Sudan government plans to hang a pregnant woman just because she is a Christian. Her marriage to her husband was voided by the Sudan government and it wants to punish her as an adulteress because she has intimate relationship with her husband.
* Conflicts and deadly fights in Ukraine
* Terror bombings in China

Amidst all these happenings, we are hard working to make a living. So let us ask a question?  Shall we just keep going and forget about all these happenings?  We may say that nothing we can do anyway. A  better answer seems to be: we better find a way to keep our sanity. Perhaps, even more importantly how to be peaceful within us amidst chaos and injustice and terrors around us.
So who do you think we should go to get some guidance? Politicians, philosophers, professors or any secular or religious leaders? Or perhaps we should google it to find an answer?  Based upon past history, we would not be in the current situation if  the solution can be found in them. Actually, the world was messed up more by those so called wise men, leaders, and smart policies, etc.
The following are just a few lessons that we should keep in mind.

* How can we maintain some sense of an ethical standard when our society tries to destroy morality at the same time.
* How can we maintain law and order when there are lawlessness rampages even in minor thing such as driving.
* How can a society offer jobs and opportunities when the legislators keep choking small businesses by overburdening them with regulations and more regulations.

Given all these chaos, it seems that we should return to our Creator and ask Him for guidance. Actually there are more chaos than those happenings that met the eyes. If we can not even  answer what happen to us when we die or where we are going after we say goodbye to this world, we better urgently seek our Creator to save us. Before we have peace externally among people and nations, we need to have peace with an angry and holy God who will judge all that are wicked and evil in this world.
Since we cannot solve this problem individually or collectively, here are a few reminders from our Creator;

1. We need to receive the peace outside us from our Creator.
    John 16:33-  These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
    John 14:27-  Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

2. Before we can receive this peace, we need to be reconciled with God through His blessed provision. That is, we need to have our sin forgiven and have perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ imputed to us through our faith in Him.

    John 3:16-  “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
    Romans 3:21-26  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

May our Merciful and Almighty God richly bless you when you place your ultimate trust in Jesus Christ our Lord who can save not only your body but also your soul now and ever more into His glorious eternal kingdom, Amen.

既然我們、單獨或集體、都不能解決這個問題,這裡有來自我們的造物主、幾點提醒;

A. 羅馬書 12:1-2,

A Reminder of God’s Will on All of Us

A feature of  modern life is fast pace of life activities. It appears that we could be detracted by many things that compete for our time. As such, we could easily fall onto many mundane things that are not profitable in our edification. It is indeed good to be reminded about specific God’s Will on all of us, which was clearly revealed in the following verses in the Scripture and we should always keep them for our edification.

A. Romans 12:1-2, 12 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

B. Colossians 1:27, 27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

C. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7, 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. 7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.

D. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

In a fast pacing life, we need recreation to relax and unwind. This is the place that all Christians should watch out. We shall avoid completely from internet activities and potential places that you feel questionable. If those activities  and places are not  in conformance to the above quoted Bible verses, then for our holiness sake, do separate ourselves cleanly from those activities and places. We cannot deceive ourselves. We cannot live in sins and pretend to be Christians who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
