Holy Land Trip( Part 1)

I. Introduction
In May of 2023, Ann and I  had the privilege of joining a guided trip to the Holy Land Israel. It was indeed an eye-opening trip. Our previous understandings of the Holy Land prior to this  trip are indeed full of naiveties and lacking true knowledge.
Someone said  that each holy land trip is personal to the person and hence it is impossible to give general personal experience as each of us is different. Although there is lot of truth in this saying, we still believe that explanation of our trip should give some reference to the holy land and hence hopefully help someone to plan their personal trips to the holy land.

II. Weather and Topography of the Holy Land
Before the trip, we learned that the weather and topography of Israel are quite similar to the southern California. Weather is indeed quite similar. But the topography is not so similar. Although both Israel and Southern California are of the desert type of topography, but we would say that Israel land in general is much of slope hill type and lots of rocks in the hill slope. In other words, it is hard to cultivate the the hill country of the Israel. Thus, we saw many parts of the hill slopes were semi-arid and left in wildness in the holy land. This may explain that why California produces so much agriculture products and is a main fruits producing region of USA.

III. Population and Religion Mix
According to Central Bureau of Statistics estimates: on 31 December, 2022, Israel's population is estimated at 9,656,000 residents. 7,106,000 are Jews (73.6% of the total population), 2,037,000 - Arabs (21.1%) and 513,000 Others (5.3%).The religious affiliation of the Israeli population as of 2022 was 73.6% Jewish, 18.1% Muslim, 1.9% Christian, and 1.6% Druze. The remaining 4.8% included faiths such as Samaritanism and Baháʼí, as well as "religiously unclassified”.

We were so ignorant about the population and religion mix of the holy land that we were educated a lot in this area during  this trip. we learned that most of christians are Arabs in Arab villages. According to the statistics at the end of 2022, Christians made up 1.9% of the Israeli population, numbering approximately 185,000. 75.8% of the Christians in Israel are Arab Christians. Christians make up 6.9% of the Arab citizens of Israel.

IV. Our Observations
1. Prior to the trip, I was not aware of the fact that most of Christians in Israel are not jewish. In fact, it is hard to make a living as Christians in Israel as our tour guide told us. With population mix of 73.6% Jews, and 21.1% Arabs, Christians make up 7% of Israel’s Arab population, and 76.7% of Christians in Israel are Arab. The largest Arab Christian population centers in Israel are Nazareth (21,400), Haifa (16,500) and Jerusalem (12,900).
2. As Christians, we certainly hope that Israel will have more Christians in its population but apparently due to Jewish belief the holy land as it stands today is not a fertile land for christianity.
3. Although Israel is an advanced country in many high tech products. Due to its rock land and topography, agriculture is not a main part of the business in Israel. This indeed will have a continuous influence of the life in the holy land in years to come.

Holy Land Visit ( Part 2)

I.  Introduction
1. If you look at the topography of Israel, it is clear that Israel has the following key features:From the west , it is coasted on  the Mediterranean Sea shore, and has plains along its western side with cities such as Haifa from the north to Tel Aviv, toward center and Gaza in the south. There is a mountain range straightening from  the north neighboring Lebanon  all the way to Negev desert towards the south.
2. Judea is located in the western side of the long mountain range and Jerusalem is located at the hill top of this mountain range.
3. To the east of this mountain range is a very long north-to- south valley which includes Sea of Galilee which flows Jordan River into the Dead Sea and eventually the valley extends southernly towards the Red Sea region.

4. To the east of this valley region, it is another mountain range neighboring Syria, and Jordan.

II. Holy Land Trip ( Part 2)
1. Per the Scripture, quite a bit of our Lord’s earthly ministry in the New Testament happened around the Sea of Galilee region. The Sea of Galilee is more of a lake than a sea. For example, you can see the boundary of the lake when you stand on its shore.
2. One thing surprised us was the rocky shores of the Sea of Galilee. We stood about no more than 20 feet from the Lake but we were surprised to see the large waves whipped up by the wind. The Lake shore is not like the sandy beaches of Southern California or the Michigan lake of the Chicago area. The Sea of Galilee is more like water in a bowl and hence it is easily disturbed by the wind. This explained many features of the stories described in the Gospel such as the event described in Matthews 8:23-27 and the walking on the sea event described in Matthews 14:22-33.
3. In our Holy Land trip, we spent a lot of time around Capernaum and Sea of the Galilee. Per Scripture, Capernaum worked as a “ministry headquarter” for our Lord. Capernaum was a place where our Lord performed many miracles including the healing of the man stricken with an evil spirit (Mark 1:21-28), healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, and the healing of paralyzed man lowing from the roof by his four men (Mark 2:1-5).

III. Our Observations
1. The topography of the Sea of Galilee is so amazing that we learned a lot and have a much better understanding of the Gospel description of the Galilee’s ministry.
2. If you plan to visit the Holy Land, it would be very beneficial that you should buy a 3-D topography map of Israel before your trip.

Holy Land Trip ( Part 3)

I.  Introduction
Jerusalem is no doubt the holiest city in Christianity. Visitation of Jerusalem was indeed the highlight of the holy land trip. As mentioned before, Jerusalem is located on the high mountain range.  To the west, across the Kidron Valley, the entire Old City is in full view. To the east, you look down on the towns of Bethany and Bethpage. The Mount of Olives is the dominating mountain ridge that extends in length from south to north. In ancient times, it was from the Mount of Olives that Jewish pilgrims, ascending toward Jerusalem from the east, gained their first view of the grandeur of the Temple Mount during the annual Feasts.

II.  Jerusalem

1.  City of Jerusalem has a long history even beyond the NT time. You may remember that after King David died, his kingdom was split into two: in the north - Israel, and in the south - Judah. The Israelites formed their capital in the city of Samaria, and the Judaeans kept their capital in Jerusalem. The following is a brief history of the Temple.

A.  The First Temple was constructed during the reign of David’s son, Solomon, and completed in 957 BCE. The Temple suffered at the hands of Nebuchadrezzar II of Babylonia, who removed the Temple treasures in 604 BCE and 597 BCE and totally destroyed the building in 587/586.
B.  Cyrus II, founder of the Achaemenian dynasty of Persia and conqueror of Babylonia, in 538 BCE issued an order allowing exiled Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. Work was completed in 515 BCE. There is no known detailed plan of the Second Temple, which was constructed as a modest version of the original building. Of major importance was the rebuilding of the Second Temple begun by Herod the Great, king (37 BCE–4 CE) of Judaea. Construction began in 20 BCE and lasted for 46 years. The area of the Temple Mount was doubled and surrounded by a retaining wall with gates. ( This rebuilt temple was generally referred to as the Herodian Temple).  The rebellion against Rome that began in 66 CE soon focused on the Temple and effectively ended with the Temple’s destruction on the 9th/10th of Av, 70 CE.
C.  What we have today: All that remained of the retaining wall surrounding the Temple Mount was a portion of the Western Wall (also called the Wailing Wall), which continues to be the focus of Jewish aspirations and pilgrimage. Made part of the wall surrounding the Muslim Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqṣā Mosque in 691 CE, it returned to Jewish control in 1967.

2.  City of Jerusalem has great significant in our Lord’s NT ministry including healing a blind man at Siloam Pool (John 9:1-7), prediction of the destruction of the temple (Mark 13:1-2), preaching at the temple mount (John 7:37-43), Last Supper at Upper room (Luke 22:7-13), and the Via Dolorosa / Stations of the Cross (John 19:6-18).

3.  The Holy Land Visit

A.  During NT time, our Lord visited Jerusalem from Galilee. Our tour guide took us to the mountain pass that our Lord would have walked through on His way to Jerusalem. It was an unbelievable experience to see the path our precious Lord once passed through to Jerusalem.
B.  We were very interested to visit the Mount of Olives. However, most of the hill was built with various structures. we were disappointed to see only a small portion of the Mount of Olives still has olive trees.

C.  Our tour guide also showed us some of the Stations of the Cross where our Precious Lord endured to purchase us from our sins. It left us with such mixed emotion concerning the amazing grace and His passion love that “How can it be that my God even died for me”.
D.  We were also at the site of Holy Sepulcher Church where our Lord was raised from the dead.(John 20:1-8)
E.  We also visited the Wailing Wall several times during our trip. We also prayed at the Wailing Wall.
F.  We also visited the Museum which has a very impressive model which shows the great view of the City of Jerusalem.

4. Our Observations
A.  At the Wailing Wall, we saw the orthodox Jews in prayers. We were also very sad to see the lesson  of the Temple destruction  due to rejection of the Messiah Jesus Christ was not learned.
B.  We learned that Jerusalem was under Moslem control for hundreds of years. Between AD688 and AD691, the Dome of the Rock mosque was constructed by al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik. Two years later, the al-Aqsa mosque was built on the same site, commemorating the place of the prophet’s prostrations. The two mosques and their surroundings became known as al-Haram al-Sharif and it became the third holiest site for Muslims. With various mosques on the temple mount today, it sadly shows the unfaithfulness of Christianity and its consequences.
C.  Per the Scripture, all Christians are placing our hope on the Second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ to establish His millennial kingdom. He will be King of the kings and Lord of the lords.

Holy Land Trip ( Part 4 ) - The Petra of Jordan

1.. ntroduction
Part of our Holy Plan included a trip to the Petra region in Jordan. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains with impressive topography. It is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture.

2. The Petra trip
A. Our tour guide took us to a river gorge with impressive rock formation. We even took a river plunge with life jackets protection.
B. We also toured several archaeologic sites.
C. We also toured Jordan capitol Amman.

3 Our Observations
A. Crossing the boundary from Israel to Jordan, we began to sense the great changes in scenery and infrastructure right away.
B. In Israel. the tap water is drinkable but in Jordan, even in Amman, the tap water is not. From our perspectives, it, drinkability of tap water, tells a great deal about the status of a country.
C. Al Siq Canyon is the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra. The Siq is a narrow canyon that is 1.2 kilometers long, and visitors need to walk through the 80 meter high cliffs to reach the sites at Petra. When we looked up in the Canyon, it was a great sight of “ one-line sky”.
D. Some one in our tour guide indicated that the Petra portion is more fun than that of the Israel trip. Scenery wide, it is indeed a valid comment.
